| On
your site there are a lot of terms used with which I'm not familiar. Can
you define some of these for me? • Bas-Relief A manner of sculpturing where the designs or figures project only slightly from the background. • Biscuit An earthenware or porcelain vessel that has been fired once but not glazed. • Ceramic Objects made of clays that are processed through firing or baking. Can include pottery, earthenware, tile, porcelain, stoneware, etc. • Crazing Small lines that may appear in glaze. Generally due to the expansion and contraction of the ceramic caused by extreme changes in temperature. • Drinkware Any glass item used for drinking. • Earthenware Containers, tableware, etc made from baked clay. • Flatware Table utensils, as in knives, forks, and spoons. • Gilding The application of gold to the surface of an object for decorative purposes. • Glass Ornamentation Gold decoration applied to the surface of cold glass and then fired a second time at a low temperature. After firing, the ornamentation must be burnished to create a shine. • Glazing The process of applying glaze to ceramics so that they are sealed with a hard gloss-like finish and are impermeable to liquid absorption. • Lustres Thinly applied overglazes that serve a decorative purpose by creating an iridescent appearance. These lustres cause a metallic film to adhere to the ceramic surface that becomes iridescent when burnished. • Maiolica The Italian name for earthenware that has been coated with a tin-oxide glaze and is highly decorated in deep shades and colors. The term is sometimes used for all European tin-glazed earthenware but is more properly restricted to Italian wares and direct imitations of them. • Majolica A corrupt form of the word maiolica applied in the 19th century to a type of earthenware very richly modeled and covered with thick and deeply colored glazes. • Matte Glaze A dull glaze surface that is not very reflective when fired; it needs a slow cooling period or it may turn reflective and shiny. • Mouth-Blown Glass Glass that is shaped by blowing air through a hollow pipe into the glass to create any given shape. Used now mostly to create one-of-a-kind pieces. • Overglaze Decoration Glaze that is applied to the surface of a ceramic piece that has already been glazed and fired, that covers the piece with a protective coating and then fixed by low-temperature firing. • Pottery Any vessels made by potters of clay hardened by heat; earthenware. • Serveware Any vessel used for serving food, particularly platters, trays and bowls. • Terra Bianca White clay. • Terra Cotta Porous red clay. • Terra Marone A durable brown clay, used to make VIETRI’s Incanto Dinnerware, traditionally used for sculptures and wall art for churches and other major institutes. • Underglaze Decoration that is applied directly to the biscuit or bisque before glazing. • Wall Tile A glazed tile with a body that is suitable for interior use. Wall tiles are not expected to withstand excessive impact or freezing and thawing conditions. |
